Metric vs Imperial

The metric system (SI units) is used by most of the world. The imperial system is primarily used in the United States, with some units (like stone for body weight) still common in the UK. When cooking from international recipes or travelling, unit conversion is an everyday need — especially for temperature (oven settings) and volume (cup measurements).

Temperature Conversions

Temperature is the one category where the conversion isn't a simple multiplication — it requires an offset. The formulas are: °C to °F: (°C × 9/5) + 32. °F to °C: (°F − 32) × 5/9. °C to Kelvin: °C + 273.15. Common reference points: water freezes at 0°C / 32°F, water boils at 100°C / 212°F, and normal body temperature is 37°C / 98.6°F.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are exactly 2.54 centimetres in one inch. To convert inches to centimetres, multiply by 2.54. To go the other way, divide by 2.54.
Celsius = (Fahrenheit − 32) × 5/9. For example, 98.6°F = (98.6 − 32) × 5/9 = 37°C.
One pound equals approximately 0.4536 kilograms. To convert lbs to kg, multiply by 0.4536. To go the other way, multiply kg by 2.2046.
One US gallon equals approximately 3.785 litres. Note that the US gallon and the imperial (UK) gallon differ — one imperial gallon equals approximately 4.546 litres.
