How to Use the Tip & Split Calculator

Enter your restaurant bill total, select a tip percentage (or type a custom one), and enter the number of people splitting the bill. Hit Calculate Split and you'll instantly see the total per person, the tip amount, and the overall bill total.

What's a Fair Tip?

In the United States, standard tipping norms for sit-down restaurants run from 15% for average service up to 20–25% for excellent service. In many other countries, tipping is either not expected or much lower — so context matters.

For counter service, coffee shops, and takeout orders, 10–15% is the common range, and tipping is increasingly optional depending on the situation. Use what you think is fair for the service received.

Splitting Unequal Bills

This calculator splits the bill evenly. If people ordered different amounts or some guests are paying differently, the cleanest approach is still to calculate the tip on the total and then divide it evenly — the maths difference is usually negligible, and it prevents the awkward per-item accounting that slows things down.

The Tip on Tax Question

Technically, tips are calculated on the pre-tax amount. In practice, most people tip on the post-tax total because it's simpler. On a typical restaurant bill, the difference is a dollar or two — not worth the mental overhead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the bill by 0.20. On a $50 bill, a 20% tip is $10, making the total $60. Our calculator does this automatically — just enter the bill amount and select 20%.
Divide the total (bill plus tip) by the number of people. Our calculator shows you the per-person amount instantly once you enter the number of diners.
Standard tip percentages in the US are 15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good service, and 20–25% for exceptional service. For takeout or counter service, 10–15% is common.
Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically correct, but most people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. The difference is small — on a $50 meal with 8% tax, it's less than $1 either way.
